Dr. Richard Zoumalan is a double board certified Facial Plastic and Reconstructive surgeon with a private practice in Beverly Hills, CA. Although he is recognized for his surgical accomplishments and research publications, the foundation of his work lies in his philanthropic passions.
As an artist, Dr. Zoumalan appreciates the contours of the face and the anatomical features that differentiate one from another. Distinguishing features are what Dr. Zoumalan continually studies from one patient to another; he believes in the value of individual beauty.
Dr. Zoumalan applies this belief to his practice and urges each patient to aspire for the most natural results. Often, this aspiration can be conflicting when he hears the stories of his patients and the long journey that led them to his office. Often, the reasons for their consultation come from peers rejection, torment, and years of developed insecurities. As a plastic surgeon, he aims to help people achieve their goals; as a humanitarian, he strives to educate the acceptance of individuality.
Although physical appearance can commonly be the cause of such bullying, it can be verbal, emotional and commonly cyber-based. The National Center for Educational Statistics reported that “One out of every four students report being bullied during the school year (National Center for Educational Statistics, 2015).”
The effects of bullying can be far more complex than appearance-related and the long-term impact from any type of bullying can threaten every asset of one’s life and change the path of their future. By educating the community, Dr. Zoumalan hopes to reverse the insouciant nature and prevalence of this type of bullying and set a new precedent for what even a surgeon can appreciate as truly beautiful.
